I have given presentations around the county, and am overwhelmed at the positive response to Bitter Sweet, my family story. I can’t help getting emotional when I speak in public. As you can imagine, the subject is so close to my heart. Prosper and Blanche, my Alsatian great-grandparents both died in the Holocaust.
I speak to libraries, book clubs, and other groups.. and at unique events such as at the Lawrence Jewish Community Center in La JOlla (CA) where they created a menu from my recipes, and had me come to chat with the diners. GREAT FOOD! GREAT AUDIENCE!
Just a quick note to announce that I am off to Peru this week, on a medical mission in the Amazon. I will be acting as interpreter for a Peru-based medical group, and cooking for the volunteers with local ingredients in the jungle (really!) then spend a few days eating my way around Lima. Lots to tell when I return!
ANY HINTS TO SHARE ABOUT LIMA’s DINING SCENE is appreciated. I will give a talk to the Culinary Institute in Lima, as well a take classes in Amazonian cooking, where else, but in the Amazon. YESS!

If you want to melt chocolate chips into ganache, thicken a smooth, creamy hollandaise, or bake a custard that separates easily from your springform pan, you’ll need to deploy one of the most essential tools in the baker’s arsenal: the double boiler, also called the water bath or bain-Marie.
The bain-Marie, which is French for “Mary-bath,” helps to distribute heat gently and evenly. In addition to kitchens, it’s used in chemistry labs and the production of soap, perfume, dye, and candles.
A bain-Marie consists of a set of two pans, one set inside the other. Ingredients are placed in the upper pan, and the lower pan is filled with water and heated over the stove. Home cooks can achieve a similar effect by placing a bowl over a pot of boiling water, or by baking one pan inside a pan full of water in the oven.
